ART IN THE KEY OF LIFE

MY SPECIAL PAINTINGS ABOUT HAITI

Based on memories of living in Haiti for a brief time, these paintings
were done while the artist was living in Seattle. The paintings are classics of the
artist's collections, much loved colorful paintings completed around 1993. Mari is very pleased
to offer these arts again as fine art giclees printed on fine art watercolor papers.

"The Corn Goddess" has a bold Caribbean palette, intricate patterning and texture in the hair and bodice of the Goddess. Inspired by Haitian painting and African sculpture, this highly symbolic painting speaks of our true relationship with the Mother Earth, and our continued dependency upon her gifts for our surivival. There are wonderful details in this painting, and the color is spectacular!

"Les Marchandes" is dedicated to the women of Haiti. The marchandes run the local commerce in Haiti, and they can been seen on almost every roadway, carrying their market items in baskets on their heads. Women carrying baskets is a popular theme among Haitian painters, but in this painting, I chose to depict the women at the end of their work day.

"The High Priestess of Jacmel" celebrates our increasing awareness of the interconnectedness of life. The setting is a small beach town called Jacmel, in the southern part of Haiti. The High Priestess is the guardian of creatures large and small, symbolized by the doves and the leopards in the painting. The High Priestess is both a majestic and magnetic work of art.

ABOUT MARI'S SPECIAL HAITI PAINTINGS
Living in Haiti was a life transforming experience for the artist, Mari Hall. An impressionable young person, the artist began her path as a painter amidst this culture rich in creativity. The flowering of this cultural contact strongly influenced her mature artistic production.

The Haitian Series began as a series of reflections, distilled through the filter of time and space. Rather than painting documentary-like pieces, the artist chose to reflect upon the beauty and strength of these remarkable people.

"Les Marchandes" (The Market Women) is a tribute to the women of Haiti. In this painting, the artist shows the dignity and royal bearing of these women who approach life fully amidst the most adverse circumstances.

Both "The High Priestess of Jacmel" and "The Corn Goddess" convey an eloquent message of guardianship of the planet, love of each other and respect for all creatures in our care.
